The Parish of Newbattle is part of the Church of Scotland. Within the parish boundaries are three large diverse communities and three centres of worship. Newbattle Church has a rich historical heritage that reaches back many centuries. Newtongrange Church was built in the 1940's to meet a rapidly expanding mining community. Mayfield/Easthouses Church was opened in 1955 to cope with the massive growth in population. Of course, much has changed over the past few years. The world today is very different from the world of 50 years ago. However, the church remains, offering opportunities for worship and service.
So why bother with the church and what does the Christian faith have to offer to today's complicated world?
A good question! In an age in which many decry Scotland's rich Christian heritage and challenge the presuppositions and relevance of faith, I think I would want to say that although society has changed, people have not. We are still humans. We still have to wrestle with the age-old questions of value, purpose and meaning. We still have to deal with the difficulties and the joys and problems of human experience. We still have to face the fact of our mortality.
Whilst, we do not offer instant answers to complicated questions, what we do offer is the opportunity to explore faith and develop our spirituality. At the heart of our ethos and activities is the belief that the God who revealed himself in Jesus Christ can be known and encountered and that our spirituality can both significantly enrich our living and prepare us for eternity. In Jesus Christ, we are offered 'life in all its fullness' in this life and the life to come.
If you would to know more about what we do or how you can be involved, please do not hesitate to contact myself or any member of the ministry team. Extensive details about our congregations (location, time of services etc.) can be found on this website. In addition, we run a series of study groups and Alpha Courses, which provide a user-friendly non-judgemental way of exploring faith and spirituality.
With warmest greetings,
Rev Sean Swindells, Parish Minister
